Troubleshoot Your Air Conditioner in 4 Easy Steps

Here in New England, the arrival of spring means the sticky days of summer aren’t too far behind. Massachusetts homeowners know the best way to prepare for uncomfortable weather is to plan ahead. That means covering all the bases: refill the grill’s propane tank, schedule your annual A/C maintenance, and even stock up on sunscreen.

But what happens if your air conditioner stops working? Before you call in a certified technician, try these industry-approved tips to get your system up and running.

  1. Turn thermostat down

The first place to start is your thermostat. Check the temperature and knock it down a few degrees. It may be too high, causing your cooling system to overwork and shut down.

  1. Switch thermostat to cool

If you have a ductless mini-split system, your air conditioner also operates as a heater. Check your thermostat to see if it is on the proper setting.

  1. Feel for cool air coming from registers

Next, if previous tips don’t seem to do the trick, give your registers a look. Investigate their output to see if cool air (or any air) is being produced.

  1. Check to make sure condensation is draining normally

Take a look at the unit’s drainage system. Excessive condensation can result in blockage, causing risk for water damage or mold growth. If you notice any overflow, contact your local cooling service team.

If none of these suggestions appear to remedy the issue, no sweat! Give your local cooling specialists a call. A trained professional will be right over to diagnose and repair the problem, getting your home back to the cool comfort you know and love.
